Reception Hall:  Booked.  (Orlando Gardens off Watson for those that are interested.)

I think booking the hall finally made this whole wedding-business-thingy click.

Last night it finally seemed real.  We’re getting married….on New Years Eve!!!

My crafty side came out and I went to my creative blogs and put in the keywords: “New Years Eve”.

I then found this:

And I jumped up and did a happy dance.  I hyperventilated a little.  Then I called my mom.

“I need 30 vintage clocks!  It’s how we’re going to count down til midnight!”

Yes, it’s true.  Creative Katie has woken up from hibernation.

I have a wedding to plan.  Do you have any clocks?

Happy 50th Birthday!

January 28, 2010

My mom turned 50 this week.  We threw her a surprise party and invited her closest friends and family.  When I say closest, I mean around 100 people.  If you’re new to the blog, or you don’t know me, I have a huge family…plus my mom has great friends.  Keeping a secret with that many people is hard.  Really hard.  We didn’t really expect it to stay a secret, we could only hope.

Everyone went really out of their way to keep this a secret.  My dad created a new email account to email all things “birthday party”.  There was no texting back and forth and the only time we could talk about it on the phone was during my plan period at school, or while my mom was staying with my grandma.  Bottom line, we were so sneaky.

So how did we get her to a banquet hall without her having ANY idea until she opened the door?  She had to have known.  Right?  Wrong.  As many of you know, I’m engaged.  I’ve been engaged for a month now, and for the past two weekends Shawn and I have been looking at banquet places to have our reception.  My mom and dad have been coming to check out the place as well so they have been meeting us at these places.  Well, it just worked out perfectly to tell her to meet us at the banquet hall.  When she opened the door to her party, she wasn’t sure what was going on.

It took her a few minutes to do this.

And then this…

Later she came up to me and said, “So…we’re not booking a banquet hall today?”

:)

It was a fun day filled with so many people!  I would add more pictures, but I’m saving it for something special I’m making for her.

Behind the Scenes

January 25, 2010

There is no doubt the past few months have been jammed packed.  So jammed that I haven’t had time to blog about anything.  We have been really busy and secretive around here lately, and for a very good reason.  My dad, brother, and I planned a surprise party for my Mom’s 50th Birthday.   I couldn’t say anything on twitter, my blog, or even text my dad with information.  My dad even created a new email account because they share the other one.  We were sneaky.

We all did our part in making the party perfect.  I will say my dad did a wonderful job and did a lot of the preparations all by himself.  Here is just a little of what I’ve been busy with.

Scanning pictures from the past.

My mom is from a family of 10 kids.  9 girls and 1 boy.  Here she is in the front and center…this is my favorite picture ever!  The sisters in the back are what makes this picture so perfect and funny.

Creating Invitations

Thank gosh for Shawn’s editing skills.  I originally had it say, “Shh…it’s a surprise.”  I guess the way I had it formatted wasn’t the best.  When he read it aloud didn’t have the cleanest of words.

I had to change that…quick.

Sweet Treats

Last Sunday we spent the entire day making chocolate covered pretzels for the party favors.  (We only ate a few!)

My brother and dad picked out all of the decorations and my dad chose a yummy cake.  They did a wonderful job!  It all came together and the best part of everything was it was a surprise!  She really had no idea.  I’ll tell all about the *perfect* way that we got her to the place (without her having a clue) in another post this week!

Thanks to everyone who helped make this party such a special day for my mom!

It’s been too cold outside to even think about a long walk. I feel like I have neglected my dog and she is trying to make up for the lack of attention. I went to take a short shower, and when I got out, I noticed it had snowed tissues in my living room. Scarlett had gotten up on the couch, invited herself to my desk, and thought it would be fun to destroy the tissues. I will have to admit that she has kind of been ignored lately. When we are home, we’re too busy to even throw her Snoopy. Today it warmed up to 51 degrees so I took Scarlett for a walk. A real walk. I let her sniff the bushes and lead the way. She really liked it. When we got home I made a point to throw her Snoopy and give her a rawhide. She loves rawhide.

The other day I made this random video. It was my trial at learning (i)movie set to video, music, and pictures. Before you watch it, let it be known: It’s pointless. It will waste one minute of your life. I look terrible and Scarlett looks scared. It’s so random.

Things have been a little crazy lately. A lot crazy. Time hasn’t been spent on wedding planning…although we have spent time on it with every spare minute we get. We’re not as far as most might be at this stage. We’re ok with that though. Shawn has already been a huge help, emailing reception places and creating a spread sheet with detailed pricing. He joked that he will do that part and I can do the rest!

Questions we’ve been asked:

When is it?
We’ve decided on New Years Eve! We’re both huge fans of New Years Eve and it just fit our personalities.

How many people?
Probably around 250-300. That number is mostly family…and not the kind of family you only see on Christmas. Seriously, I can’t even begin to describe how many of those 300 are close family members. (I feel another blog post coming on.)

Where?
St. Alban Roe Church
No reception place yet. We need BIG and NOT going to put us in debt. There is no, “Windows on Washington” in our vocabulary.

Colors?
Black, Silver, Gold and all that goes with New Years Eve.

Is it just going to be one big NYE/Wedding party?
That’s our goal!

Who are the bridesmaids?
I have 6 bridesmaids and each one of them are so different. I chose 6 girls who have always supported me, that make me laugh, and are just fun people. I’m so excited! Here is the video I made to ask them:

*I didn’t take all of these pictures, some I took from Facebook, so thanks to those who took some of those pictures. ;)

For all of the other more detailed questions, we haven’t even gone there yet. One person told me I’m ahead of the game, and even if it’s a lie, well it made me feel better. That’s why she’s also a bridesmaid, already making me feel better about things!

My Ring.

January 6, 2010

I’ve had so many people ask me to put some pictures up so they could see my ring.  I’ve gone back and forth with the idea of posting a picture.  I know “everybody does it” on Facebook, I just feel kind of weird.  I don’t know why.  I even wrote this post and then slept on it for a few nights before deciding to just post it on my blog.  I share my world with my blog readers anyway…so here it goes.

Did I pick out the ring?  No. The only thing I told Shawn was I wanted a cushion cut diamond and a solitaire would be just fine for me.  He totally surpassed anything I could have wanted!  It’s elegant, and is something I’m going to love wearing everyday of my life.  Shawn did such a good job, you’ll have to see it in person.  If you can’t tell we’re engaged by my left hand, you can look at BOTH of our faces…we’re pretty smiley these days.

On another note, for those of you that are waiting, our “exciting thing”  is a bit delayed.  My college roommate emailed me and told me she was “blog stalking” waiting for it.  I probably shouldn’t have even mentioned it because now I’m worried about letting everyone down!  The truth is, I realized I didn’t have the software or other equipment needed to make my little project perfect.  My new computer should be here this week so hopefully I’ll be able to get the ball rolling a little bit.

2009 Video Below

January 3, 2010

Look Under this Post for the Video!  I’ve been having an extremely hard time trying to embed videos into my blog lately.  I finally got it, well half way, so I just posted it.  Look below this post and enjoy.

2009 was a great year!  Wonderful trips, fun with friends, celebrations with family, and getting engaged!  Looking back on 2009 and where I am now, is a huge change.  I can only pray that my life will continue to get this much better every year.  I have a lot to be thankful for and a lot more to look forward to!

Last year’s video is on my Facebook page if you haven’t seen it.  Sorry, I can’t post it here because of technical issues.

This year the song is “Getting Late”,  by Rob Thomas.

2009 My Life in Pictures from Katie Stasiak on Vimeo.

I watched The Sound of Music the other day and it reminded me I was going to write up about my favorite things!  Oprah does it, so I can too.  These are just things, material things, and we all know that material things are not the most important “things”.  I felt the need to put that disclaimer in there.  Hehe.

Alright, first on my list, is my trusty, lovely, can’t live without 50mm 1.4.  Primes are wonderful!

Where would I be without my Dell Inspiron?  This trusty thing, as slow as it is and as much as it doesn’t hold, has served me very well these past 4 years.  I have promised her (yes my laptop is a her) that if she holds out until the Mac 27 arrives, I will delete all things related to photography on her.  She will live again.

Yankee Candles…I have a candle to go with every season!  Sun and Summer and Christmas Eve are two of my favorites!

I’ve been saving money for other things this year, but every once in awhile when I need something, or I want something new to wear, my first place to go is H&M.   I can always find way more than I came in for but my favorites are their scarves and summer dresses.

Two words: Power Windows.  Seriously, never before have I had power windows.  Sometimes I open my back windows in 15 degree weather, just because I can! Two more words: Power Locks.  0% financing is another favorite thing.  Ok, ok, before I make a huge list, I’m just going to say, my Jeep is a lot of my favorite things.

Sirius Radio!  My favorite stations are The Pulse, CoffeeHouse, and Willie Radio.  Ohhh, how I will miss it so much in February when my free year subscription ends.

Favorite Find of 2009:  Google Reader.  It’s free and it’s amazing…how did I ever live without it?  I love most all things “Google”.  Picasa, Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Chat, Google Text…I could go on.

I love Children books!  I get just as excited as the kids do when the book orders come back.  This is a really hard category for me to choose my favorites.  Two of the most read books in my classroom this year were an old favorite, Miss Nelson is Missing and a new favorite, Purplicious.

Favorite thing to live without?  Cable.  Who needs it when you have the internet and can get all of your TV needs there?  I’m not against cable at all, I just don’t have it.

So here were a few of my favorites of 2009!  My camera equipment and computer definitely top the list my favorite material things!  Everything else is just in random order.  Ok, no more advertisements from me for awhile.
